Zuarungu Nursing Training College Receives Certification To Run Post Nurse Assistant Clinical Midwifery Programme

The Zuarungu Nursing Training College (ZNTC) in the Upper East Region has received certification from the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) to run a Post Nurse Assistant Clinical Midwifery Programme.This would augment the staff strength of midwives in the Region, Mr Michael Yidana Mantamia, the Principal of the College, has said.

He said that was an achievement and attributed it to the hardworking tutors and staff of the College.

Mr Mantamia was speaking at the matriculation ceremony of 193 students comprising 76 offering Registered General Nursing, made up of 45 males and 31 females, and 117 students offering Health Assistant Clinicals, 35 of them being males and 82 females.

He urged the students to take their academic work seriously to enable them to excel.

He said the occasion was to formally welcome and usher the fresh students into the College and admonished them to focus on their studies to maintain the good academic performance of the College in the yearly licensure examination organised by the NMC.

Mr Mantamia told the students that even though they had been matriculated, the Ministry of Health was verifying the results of all fresh students across the country and warned that 'if at any point it is found that the results any of you used was fake or below requirement, you will be withdrawn and the possible legal action taken.'

He expressed worry about accommodation challenges of the College and said no tutor was resident on campus, while students lived in rented rooms within and outside the District, and commuted to campus daily for academic activities.

'We recognise that the students are adults, but they still need guidance from tutors, and so accommodation for tutors and staff is very important to us,' he said, and appealed to landlords in the area to review their rent charges as most of them charged exorbitant prices.

Mr Mantamia called on stakeholders to assist the College with a bus to ease the stress of transporting students to various health facilities within and outside the Region for clinical attachments.

He said presently the College depended on a mini-bus, which could transport few students at a time.

Reverend Emmanuel Abugre Abole, the Bolgatanga East District Chief Executive, said the students were full-fledged members of the institution, not only with full rights and privileges, but also the responsibility of abiding by its rules and regulations.

He counselled them to live by the Code of Ethics and be disciplined adding; 'You must bear in mind that the profession you have chosen is to prepare you for the future so you must humble yourselves to allow the College to form you into professionals,' he said.

Rev Abole commended the Principal and staff for their hard work and pledged the Assembly's support towards starting the Midwifery Programme. GNA
