Accra: Odawnaa Market Under Rehabilitation

In a bid to contain more traders and expand facilities at the Odawnaa Market at Circle, the AMA is undertaking a massive renovation.

The expansion projects would cover the construction of drainage system to curb the perennial flooding in the market, rehabilitation of the market shelves, provision of a Day-Care Centre and washrooms.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is rehabilitating the Odawnaa Market to accommodate more traders and to provide additional facilities.

The project is under the Ghana Infrastructure Fund (GIF) of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).

Mr Julius Azumah, the Osu Klottey Sub-Metropolitan Assembly Director, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), urged the traders to pay their tolls and business operating permits promptly, to enable the Assembly to take up other projects in the various markets in Accra.

He expressed delight that the project would curb the perennial flooding near the drains at Odawnaa and assured that the AMA would give its fullest support for its early completion.

Mr Justice Mantey, the Site Engineer of the Comet Construction Limited, the contractors, told the GNA that the project was progressing earnestly and would be completed in six months' time.

He said 403-metres of the 500 metres drain to curb flooding in the area had been completed, while the market shelves, toilet and bath, as well as the school project was 45 per cent done.

He called on the Sub-metro to relocate the maize and pepper millers from the market area to pave way for the rest of the project.

Madam Bernice Otoo, the President of the Odawnaa Traders Association called for unity among the market women, saying that, 'Maintaining unity and peace will require the cooperation and support of the market women for the contractor to complete the project early,' she said.

She expressed gratitude to the government and Comet Construction for the execution of the project, adding that, she would take control of the activities of the traders to enable the contractor to complete the work within schedule.
