Obuasi East District Builds Capacity Of Assembly Members

A day's workshop was held on Wednesday 5th December, 2018 in Wawase in the Obuasi East District to build the capacity of Assembly members in the district.

The purpose of the workshop according to the District Chief Executive, Honorable Faustina Amissah was to take the Assembly members made up of both elected and appointees through the standing orders of the Assembly.

This she said ,would go a long way to enrich the debate of the house.

Hon. Amissah said "since this is the inaugural Assembly of the new district, it was imperative to educate the Assembly members on the rules and regulations of the Assembly. We are the law making body of the district so we need to broaden our horizon to enable us churn out good bye- laws for our people" , the former Presiding member of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly asserted.

Going forward, the DCE said she envisages a change in the way businesses are conducted in the house and issues of time wasting during Assembly meetings would be nibbed in the bud.

On his part ,the Presiding member of the Assembly,Honorable Jeff Agyei said the time has come for District Assemblies to build the capacity of its members to understand the standing orders of the Assemblies. He said," the only way to enrich debate on the floor of the house is to broaden the horizon of Assembly members in order to positively affect future deliberations at the Assembly. He appealed to the Assembly members to take full advantage of the workshop to be a good representative of their people.

Hon. Agyei gave the assurance that workshops of this nature would not be a flash in the pan. He said it would be done annually and would involve Staff of the Assembly and Media personnel in the district.

Some Assembly members who spoke to the Information Services Department could not hide their joy since in their view, educative programmes like this is what they need to contribute effectively to the Assembly. They appealed to the Assembly to periodically organise programmes like this for the members of the Assembly.

Excel Link Consult, an Accra based consultancy group were facilitators for the capacity building workshop.
