RGF Declares 2019 As National Year Of "Get Caught Reading Competition" For All Schools

Good literacy skills are essential for improving people's lives and promoting strong and sustainable economic growth in Ghana.

Developing strong skills in literacy is critical to a child's success in early learning and beyond.

Literacy gives power to the individual to develop capacities for reflection, critique, empathy and is core to personal well-being.

The establishment of Read Ghana Foundation as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is a wake up call to the literacy crisis that affect Basic School Pupils in Ghana.

We are living in a paradox:while the digital age requires ever higher levels of literacy, thousands of Ghanaian Basic School Pupils continue to fail in reaching the mark.

Far too often, we assume that, it is up to teachers, schools and government only to deal with literacy. Yet precisely because literacy skills touch so many aspects of our social and economic functioning, a broad range of players have a role to play in addressing the issues.

Speaking yesterday at Ziavi Lume Methodist Junior High School, at a program organized to climax the "Get Caught Reading Competition" in that school, the CEO/Founder of RGF Mr Mathias Tulasi reiterated the commitment of the entire membership of RGF towards inspiring a life of reading among Ghanaians especially school pupils and pregnant women.

He encouraged the pupils to take reading serious to enable them become great men and women for this country in the near future and that "Get Caught Reading Competition" as one of the initiatives of Read Ghana Foundation has come to stay in order to spark the fire and thereby instilling reading culture among them.

Congratulations were extended to the first school in Ghana to have done the "Get Caught Reading Competition" draw thus Wudoaba Basic in the Ketu South Municipality to especially their Headmaster Mr Napoleon Atisu and his staff for making it a success.

He thanked, the teachers of Ziavi Lume Methodist Junior High School especially Miss Patience Zogli Assistant Head for her great support in the entire organization.

He declared 2019 as "National Year Of Get Caught Reading Competition For All Schools "

This he said, the organization will do everything possible and make sure it becomes part of every school in the country because the inability of pupils to read is seriously affecting the country.

In the closing remarks of the Headmaster in person of Mr Eric Boateng, he congratulated the awardees and wished those who were "Caught Reading" but were not picked during the draw better luck next time. He told them, to read, read and read.

He also congratulated Read Ghana Foundation for the great initiative but added that, next time the prizes should be many so that, a lot more students will be awarded so as to motivate them to read the more.

A reading nation is a winning nation. Let us all get on board in promoting the culture of reading among children.
