Ghanaian Society Launched At Top UK University

Ghanaians studying at one of the United Kingdom’s top universities will feel at home following the launch of a new society.

Almost 30 students have already joined the University of Dundee’s Ghanaian Society, which was recently launched to bring students from the country together.

The society has already hosted its first events, including a party featuring traditional food prepared by the students.

Society founder Jessica Jackson, from Western Region, said, “I am very proud to be from Ghana and we have a strong and vibrant Ghanaian community here at the University of Dundee. The launch of this society will help to establish this further and helps us to keep in touch with Ghanaian trends and what is happening back home.

“We have already hosted our first events and we are already looking ahead to Independence Day in March. In time we want to help promote Ghana here in the United Kingdom and encourage people to learn more about our country.”

The University of Dundee already enjoys a strong relationship with Ghana, with dozens of students currently studying in what is known as Scotland’s sunniest city. Dundee has become a popular destination for Ghanaian students, offering high-quality courses relating to the oil and gas sector, as well as business and law.

Jessica, a third-year Architecture student, said that the society hopes to work with the Ghanaian High Commission in London to further promote Ghanaian culture across the UK.

She added, “Dundee is such a friendly city. When I came here for the first time the people were so welcoming and would say hello to you, which really helped me to settle in.

“There is so much here for students and this new society will help to create a home-from-home environment that we hope will attract many more people from Ghana to Dundee.”
