The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has distributed some working tools and equipment to 130 persons with disability (PWD) in the metropolis as part of activities to mark this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD).

The equipment includes 55 chest freezers, 20 sowing machines, 22 refrigerators and 20 popcorn machines as well as a GH₵ 200 startup capital. Some of the beneficiaries also received an amount of GH₵2000 startup capital for mobile money vending as well as GH₵1700 as school fees.

The Mayor of Accra, Hon Mohammed Adjei Sowah, who presented the equipment to the beneficiaries in fulfillment of the Disability Fund Act 175 said the Assembly was committed to lessening the plight of PWDs, to be economically sound in order to move away from the streets .

He said the support was to assist the PWDs to establish medium scale enterprises in order to earn a living to support their families and society.

He assured that the Assembly would embark on a monitoring exercise to ensure that the equipment and funds were put to good use.

He also encouraged PWDs in the metropolis to take advantage of the fund and send their applications to the Disability Fund Management Committee of the AMA for consideration.

The Country Director for Amnesty International, Mr. Akoto Amoako, in a remark admonished the beneficiaries to use the equipment effectively and ensure proper maintenance.

Among the beneficiaries were visually and hearing impaired individuals, physically challenged, cerebral palsy sufferers, albinos and epilepsy patients.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 in 1992.

It aims to promote the rights and well-being of Persons with disabilities, in all spheres of society and development and to increase awareness on the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, economic, social and cultural life.

This year's celebration which is under the theme; “Empowering Persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”, focuses on raising awareness and understanding of the entire Ghanaian society on issues pertaining to disability and Persons with disabilities; supporting Persons with disability to attain their self-respect, rights, welfare and security in their societies.

The celebration also focuses on analysing whether the rules and regulations implemented by government agencies to affect persons with disability positively, are serving their intended purpose as well as assisting persons with disability with the required rehabilitation, offer them equal opportunities, lessen poverty within their midst, and encourage their inclusion in society.
