Parents Can Support Free SHS – Dep. Education Minister

General News Parents Can Support Free SHS – Dep. Education Minister
NOV 29, 2018 LISTEN

Deputy Minister of Education has said every student, despite socioeconomic status or academic competency, deserves to go to grade A schools.

“We are not going to create second-class citizens anymore where the brightest are catered for leaving the weak ones behind,” Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum said on “Scorecard,” a Joy FM program designed to assess the performance of the government under President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Adutwum was reacting to a suggestion by Professor Peter Quartey who said that although he supports sending every child to school, government should make students in Grade C schools the beneficiaries of Free SHS and allow parents of students in Grade A schools pay fees.

Professor Quartey explained students from such schools have parents who cannot shoulder all their needs.

He added, “the Grade C schools do not have the numbers which will help reduce the heavy Free SHS load on the government to help sustain the initiative.”

“Allow parents with students in the Grade A schools to pay to support their children, because they are willing to pay,” he stated.

However, the Deputy Education Minister vehemently disagreed with the suggestion.

“What it means is that children from poor homes should be consigned to the schools performing poorly.”

He stated the suggestion is terrible because students who cannot afford to go to school or are academically weak, cannot also have access to quality education.

Dr. Adutwum stated the system that catered for the brilliant and left the students with aggregate 36 or below will not be subscribed to by the government.

He explained parents who want to help, can donate to the schools their wards are in.

He also advised parents to be consistent in their tax payments to add to the resources allocated for Free SHS.
