Water Shortage In Accra Blamed On Power Cuts

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has attributed the water shortage in some parts of Accra to power fluctuation from the Electricity Company of Ghana.

According to the company, this has affected the Weija treatment plant which serves the Western part of Accra hence the shortage.

Residents of Ashongman, Dansoman, Weija, and surrounding communities have for some days now had no water running through their taps.

The situation they say has affected their household activities.

But speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Clifford Braimah, explained that the blackout has made it difficult of the treatment to operate to provide residents with the water they need.

“We had a problem at Weija due to power failure. A bird crossed one of the high tension poles of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), so there was a spark and the whole system blew up. So the light went out and we had to shut off.”

We depend on the national grid to power our equipment. So, any time there is a power failure in the system, we are also affected. And sometimes, when they are repairing it, it takes a long time for them to do so.

Residents to get water soon

In spite of this challenge, Mr Braimah has assured the affected residents of water supply by the end of today.

He disclosed that ongoing works are currently underway to ensure that the problem is solved as soon as possible.

“As at this morning, the situation has been rectified and by the close of today; the pressures will build up and everyone will get water.”

Water shortages in Accra

In July this year, residents of Adabraka and Asylum down in Accra also experienced similar shortages for more than 3 weeks.

The situation was a concern for the residents as school children and women were compelled to walk long distances with gallons in search of water.

It also affected hundreds of residents; many of whom resorted to the use of water drawn from wells and sachet water for domestic purposes.

Usually, a shortage of water in the capital halts a number of business activities.

It also affects productivity as most workers are unable to get to their work-place on time.
