The Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP), Victor Agbelengor, has complained bitterly about congestion at the Ho Central Prisons, stating that the provision of three square meals a day to the inmates has become a daunting task for the institution.
Five hundred and eighty-eight inmates of the Ho Prisons are forced to share the limited space.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the congestion has worsened the plight of most prisoners.
DDP Agbelengor pleaded with government to help improve conditions at the prisons.
He made the appeal when the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, toured the facility recently to get first-hand information on the security situation in the region.
DDP Agbelengor also cited inadequate accommodation for officers in the region which affects their punctuality.
He said that staff bungalow for the officers at the Ho and Kete Krachi Prisons would support the work of the officers.
The prison officer complained about spillage from the septic tank, which he said the Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, was assisting them to deal with.
DDP Agbelengor appealed to the Interior Ministry to support them to execute the green house project to produce enough vegetables to feed the inmates.
He also called for adequate equipment and facilities to train inmates and rehabilitate them to properly fit into society.
Mr. Dery promised that their challenges would be addressed immediately to ensure that they carry out their mandate effectively.
He announced that measures have been put in place to tackle welfare, promotions and motivational packages for the officers.
He also urged them to work hard to promote peace in the country.
The minister also visited the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Regional NADMO Office and the Regional Police Headquarters where the personnel complained about the lack of personnel, logistics and accommodation.
The minister assured them that plans are far advanced to recruit 1,000 personnel into the various security services to complement their work.
