The UK Minister in charge of Africa, Lord David Maxim Triesman, says President Kufuor's commitment to judicious use of donor support from UK to meet the development needs Ghana has impacted positively on the government of Britain.

“It is always encouraging to use donor support in the exact manner that it was given” and what the President says and does with donor support is very consistent,” Lord Triesman said.

Lord Triesman who has additional responsibility for UK visas, relations with Latin America and the Caribbean was speaking on a broad range of economic and political issues during his stopover in Ghana last Thursday.

Lord Triesman described President Kufuor as a pleasant and warm leader who has driven forward the country's macro-economy and has guaranteed good governance.

He said President Kufuor is very much liked in the UK because he has a fine reputation for anti-corruption.

“I am in no position to make any judgment on anti-corruption but what I know is that Ghana is rated high in the fight against corruption in Africa and her economic performance is rated high”, Lord Triesman said.

“We have to give credit to a good direction of travel and this is what we admire in the UK,” he said.

He said that Ghana and the United Kingdom have significant trading and bilateral relationships.

“Over the years we have seen more prominent Ghanaian ministers in the UK working with us on all sorts of vital issues and having bilateral discussions with the UK government which are mutually beneficial” he stated.

Moreover, he said that Ghana is a serious player in the Commonwealth and the UK is very appreciative of Ghana's contribution.

He, however, said that UK is the fourth largest economy in the world and Ghana is not.

“When we peel off this imbalance there is a deepening bilateral relationship between the two countries which must be sustained”.
