The Ashanti Regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party has passionately kicked against the candidature of former president John Mahama as a flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr Bernard Antwi-Bosiako, otherwise known as Chairman Wontumi, in an interview with Kaakyire Kwesi Appea-Apraku on Power FM’s Dwaboase revealed his opposition to the comeback of Mr Mahama to lead the NDC.

“I am praying fervently against John Mahama’s return. Just like God helped the Israelites overcome the Egyptians; just as Pharaoh and his men were consumed by the sea, it is my prayer that John Dramani Mahama who did not work in the interest of Ghanaians does not get the chance to lead the country again,” Wontumi said in his prayer live on radio.

Former president Mahama, who is currently touring the country to sell his message to NDC delegates, officially notified his party on August 23, 2018 of his intentions to contest and lead NDC ahead of the 2020 elections.

But Chairman Wontumi believes Mr Mahama, when voted into power will “destroy the good policies” of the NPP led by president Nana Akufo-Addo.

He said the NDC while in power could not fortify and sustain the social intervention policies instituted by the John Agyekum Kufuor- led government between 2000 to 2008, adding that the Free Senior High School policy implemented by the current NPP government will collapse under a government led by former president John Mahama.

“Just like the defeat of Biblical Goliath, defeat must be the portion of John Mahama,” Mr Antwi-Bosiako said.

There are more than ten (10) persons contesting Mr Mahama to lead the NDC ahead of the 2020 polls.

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin; a former Trade Minister, Mr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah; a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester Mensah and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi are in the race.

The others include banker and oil and gas consultant, Nurideen Iddrisu; Cape Coast South, MP Kwaku Ricketts Hagan; a private lawyer, Mr Elikplim Agbemava, Mr David Doste Kwame Kuwadah and NDC communicator, Stephen Atubiga.
