Rehabilitation work on the various railway projects within the Accra-Tema metropolitan areas are progressing steadily. The minister for harbours and railways, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, announced this when he inspected work on the projects yesterday.

The projects are Airport-Shangri-La railway, Baatsona-Accra-Nsawam and the Abelenkpe through to Odaw River to join the Achimota railway. The total cost of the project is estimated at $5.5 million of which $5 million is being borne by OPEC while the rest is being paid by the Government.

The minister inspected items bought for the rehabilitation of the project, which were 858 pieces of rail imported from Poland for the laying of the railway truck, 6,000 pieces of steel sleepers from South Africa, 400 bags of pandrol clips, and ballast that is produced locally to help in the project.

The Airport-Shangri-La project is being undertaken by PW Company limited while the Baatsona project is being undertaken by David Walter Company limited.

The site engineer, Mr Mark Frimpong, promised that the filling would be completed by four weeks time and the entire project by december 26, this year.
