Ghana Red Cross Society in the Northern Region has presented 10 shelter repair kits to some hard-to-reach communities affected by floods in the Central Gonja District to enable them to erect temporary structures for accommodation.

The beneficiary communities, which included Camp, Avagorme, Nyamenaye, Adape and Centre, are along the Black Volta, and the heavy rains being experienced in those areas this season forced residents to move to higher grounds, where they needed shelter.

The Northern Region branch of the Ghana Red Cross Society, working through volunteers in the affected communities, has estimated that 103 families were affected by the floods in those areas.

Mr Abdul-Rahamani Yussif, Northern Regional Manager of the Ghana Red Cross Society, who presented the shelter repair kits to representatives of the affected communities at Kikale Number Four on Tuesday, advised them to make good use of the facility to put up temporary structures to accommodate them.

Each of the shelter repair kits have equipment such as hoe, shovel, hand saw, pick axe, wrecking bar, machete, hammer, rope and tarpaulins, which can also be used to repair damage houses and structures.

Mr Yussif said the presentation was to cushion members of the beneficiary communities to have a temporary place to stay for the time being, until the flood waters receded.

Mr Abraham Yao Agbemafo, a resident of Adape, who received the items on behalf of the affected communities, said there were old and dilapidated structures where they moved to, which required improvement to accommodate them.

Mr Agbemafo, who is also called Dr Kodzo, was happy that the Ghana Red Cross Society came to their rescue, saying the kits would be used to make temporary shelters for their stay as they waited for the flood waters to recede for them to return to their communities.

Mr Mohammed Amadu, a staff at the Information Technology Department of the Northern Region Office of the National Disaster Management Organization, urged members of the communities to avoid flood prone areas to save lives and property.
