Traders in Koforidua said in the past years, selling of plantain on the market was a lucrative business and one could earn about GH¢500.00 on a good market day.
This trend however was changing and it was no longer lucrative trading in plantain.
A forty-two year old plantain seller, Ms Juliana Ayi, in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) said a bunch of plantain which was sold for GH¢30.00 last year September is now going for GH¢7.00 due to increase in supply.
She explained that apart from the low prices, patronage of the food item has dropped significantly and the recent increase in fuel prices has worsened the situation.
Ms Ayi said now the cost of transportation of the plantain from the farms to the market has been increased with the increase in fuel prices.
Mr Frank Aboagye, a plantain hawker, complained about the increase in the market tolls which had been increased from GH¢5.00 to GH¢10.00.
He said though recent increase in cost of transport fares and market tolls were big challenges, he was not ready to stop the plantain business which had helped him in supporting himself and his family.
Mr Aboagye called on the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly to reduce the market tolls.
