26.09.2018 LISTEN

Residents of Tema Manhean have been advised to clean up their vicinity to attract tourists to the vibrant fishing community in the harbour city.

Tema Manhean, which houses the Eastern Naval Base, the Canoe beach and the Tema Fishing Harbour, is littered with refuse dumps while the Chemu lagoon, which had both economic and aesthetic values, is heavily polluted with community gabbage and industrial waste.

Mr Charles Boahene, acting Tema Metropolitan Manager of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), said his outfit would soon create a fishing tourism site in the area therefore the need for a behavioural change among the people towards sanitation.

Mr Boahene said while tourists would not feel comfortable visiting the town in its present state, it also had its health consequences on residents stressing "they should stop dirtying the place".

He disclosed that the proposed tourism site at Manhean would boost the local economy as tourists would love to see the first canoe used for seafaring in the area and how fish is processed locally, among others.

He added that to achieve this aim, GTA collaborated with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to plant 200 coconut and 50 almond trees in the area to commemorate World Tourism Day

The trees were planted at the Naval Base area, Number five beach and the frontage of the Leornardo Hotel.

He noted that the plants would be handed over to the various clans in the area to ensure the needed care for growth and eventual beautification of the community.
