General News Chairman 'Tsunami' calls for unity in NDC ahead of 2020 polls
SEP 24, 2018 LISTEN

Nana Toku, Western Regional Chairman of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has charged the grassroot support base of the party to close their ranks and rally behind the party to wrestle power in 2020.

He said the party would emerge victorious in the next general elections based on the collective effort of Ghanaians including the traditional supporters of NDC.

However, he cautioned that defeating the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in government would not come on a silver platter due to factors associated with their conduct during elections, and the trajectory of electioneering process in the country.

Consequently, he said only a united front, with determination from the camp of the NDC would influence the voting pattern, and force change to occur as part of the outcome of the polls.

Addressing enthusiastic party supporters within the central branch of the Takoradi Constituency over the weekend, after an organized "Peaceful Walk", the charismatic chairman who only bounced back last month after the internal regional elections to take charge of the party, said, he would lead the unity campaign in the resource endowed region to influence the outcome of the next general elections.

"I will lead the unity agenda. But your role as branch executive of the party would automatically be crucial. Don't seat on the fence and expect change to occur. You must be part of the building process. The party needs everyone on board, that is why unity is very critical. You must endeavour to close your ranks, and let us build a formidable team ahead of the 2020 elections", he said.

He indicated that following the outcome of the branch elections, Constituency elections and Regional elections, it was time for members of the party to close their ranks and work for victory in 2020.

Opare Addo, aspiring National Youth Organizer of the party who also addressed the mini rally which had preceded a walk through the principal streets of central Takoradi, said the NDC in opposition had been vindicated following the level of disappointment recorded within two years of the administration of President Akufo-Addo.

Under this bizarre circumstance, he called for uncompromising, unconditional, unblinking and unadulterated change during the next general elections.

He said the change being sort by angry Ghanaians, required the collective support of party members and all Ghanaians feeling the heat of the bad governance being administered by the current government.

Explaining the concept behind the walk organized by the party, the Western Regional Communication Officer of the NDC Kirk Mensah said it was one of the decentralization programs the party was using to reactivate branches and all electoral areas to become vibrant before 2020 elections.

Japhet Baidoo, Regional Organizer, Joseph Nelson, Regional Secretary, Alhaji Mustapha Iddirisu, Deputy Regional Youth Organizer among other notable figures graced the occasion.

The central message of the peaceful walk was to ask Ghanaians to change the change to save Ghana.

Participants who joined the walk from the party's constituency office from the beginning and ended it there, carried placards with inscriptions such as "Change the change" "Vote out this corrupt government"

"We are tired of disappointment under this incompetent government"

"Ghanaians want change, they don't want excuses"

Other placards however carried despicable messages painting exact picture of ongoing activities in government and about the government's failure to introduce or implement campaign promises that gave President Akufo-Addo the licence to victory in the last national elections.

Organizers of the event say, they hope to organize similar ones across the Region to drum home support for the party and activate all branches ahead of the 2020 polls.

The grand scheme, the party noted with gravity, would hover around wrestling all parliamentary seats lost in the last elections.
