Luv Fm High School Debate: YAGSS Triumph Over KUGISS
22.09.2018 LISTEN

Two female schools in Kumasi got the first contest of the Luv FM High School Debate off to an electrifying start as they put the spotlight on the recent collapse of seven indigenous banks.

Kumasi Girls Senior High School spoke for the motion, ’’Government is to be blamed for the collapse of banks’’, while Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School argued for the opposing motion.

Principal Speaker for KUGISS, Janet Opoku Agyemang, and her supporter, Emmanuella Badu, believe the Bank of Ghana’s minimum capital requirement of 400 million Ghana cedis is largely responsible for the problems in the banking sector.

They also cited licensing breaches as well as weak supervision on the part of Bank of Ghana and government indebtedness to contractors as having ultimate impact on the banks.

Precious Akua Antwi, aided by Nicole Osei Owusu of YAGSS forcefully made the point failure of banks to exercise good corporate governance brought them to their knees.

They argued if banks shirk the responsibility of scrutinizing loan applications and grant loans which become bad debt; government is certainly not to blame for their insolvency.

Besides, misappropriation of liquidity support for banks when they are in distress should, under no circumstance, be attributed to government.

In the end, YAGSS prevailed, scoring overall 210 points to 197 for KUGISS. The three judges had scored 70-65 and 69-56 for YAGSS and 76-71 for KUGISS, respectively.

In the other encounter all -female Saint Louis Senior High School beat mixed Akrofuom Senior High Technical School.

The clash between Opoku Ware School and Konongo- Odumasi Senior High School has been rescheduled for Monday.
