Youth Challenged To Develop Themselves
21.09.2018 LISTEN

Mr Afenyo Markin, Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency, has charged the youth in the constituency to take advantage of the job opportunities open to them and develop themselves.

He said local artisans, including carpenters, masons, painters and plumbers, should all up their game and work hard for their own good and that of the community.

He also advised students who are on the government scholarship to learn hard and get more of such opportunities.

He was speaking at a durbar organised by the community to welcome the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was on a tour of the region last Monday.

The comments were made in relation to the fuss between the community and the University of Education, Winneba, over the past few years.

Mr Markin indicated that all their brouhaha with the university was for the youth to benefit from the profits of the institution.

“Therefore, if a way has been paved for you to get jobs to fend for yourselves and families, please don't abuse it.” He said an abuse of the opportunity given would render all their hard work in vain.

The MP also indicated that the government's investment in the university is the community's share of the One District, One Factory (1D1F) project, and that they would ensure that their youth benefited from it.

“The university is our gold, so we have to do our possible best for our youth to have their fair share of the prospects that came with it.”

He said some people thought they were fighting against them, but all they sought for was fair and equal treatment, adding, “What was going on at the university wasn't fair.”

“People employed their cronies, leaving the chunk of the youth unattended to. Even the security job was taken from us, and since we couldn't sit and watch, we had to fight.

“As for the fight, we would continue until the dust is settled, but for the meantime, take advantage of the opportunity given.”

He also indicated that the Vice Chancellor had instructed that local artisans be employed in the real estate project taking place in the community, so people should take advantage of that as well.

Mr Markin advised those who would be awarded contracts to perform well so that they can get more and employ their colleagues. He advised them to also put to good use any money being handed to them.

Background
A Winneba High Court, in July, ordered the then Vice Chancellor, Prof Mawutor Avokeh, to step aside until a case brought against him by one Kofi Supi Kwayera was determined.

The orders were part of reliefs granted for the interlocutory injunction sought by Kwayera in the case brought against the university, which alleged that Prof Avokeh and the university's Finance Officer were operating under a defunct governing council.

The court then ordered then Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Anthony Afful-Boni to act until the determination of the case.
