IGP Opens DNA Probe Into Mysterious Disappearance Of Kudalor’s Bodyguard

The police High Command has started scientific investigations into the mysterious disappearance of a policeman nine years ago. The Policeman, Number 38222 L/Cpl Michael Odonkor Adamtey, then resident in Tema New Town, was the bodyguard of the then Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, COP John Kudalor, who later became Inspector General of Police (IGP).

In an exclusive interview with The Chronicle, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante Apeatu, expressed his unreserved commitment to see through the investigation of this matter.

On September 22, 2009, the bodyguard prepared his uniform and boots ready for the day’s duty. According to his wife, also a police personnel and their marriage blessed with two children, she returned from the barracks common bath house to meet an empty room. The husband was nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, his police accoutrements, service identity card and Ghanaian passport were intact in the room.

No stone was left unturned in the lookout for L/Cpl Adamtey, including spiritual searches, all to no avail. The family of the high ranked officer got involved by providing financial and physical supports to boost the investigation.

The police administration, as a procedure, declared him a “deserter” with an inquisition ongoing.

In 2011, two years after the disappearance, whilst workers of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) were desilting a choked gutter in Tema New Town, they discovered human bones in the manhole of an educational institution.

As part of the investigation, the bones were deposited at the Crime Laboratory of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

The parents of the missing policeman were invited to the Forensic Laboratory, where their blood samples were obtained pending further action. The facility was to establish the Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of the bones, but for unexplained reasons, that did not happen.

The police boss, a renowned forensic scientist, stated that the administration will ensure that the needed assistance is given for the laboratory to determine the DNA of the found human bones. According to the IGP, a report from the forensic analysis would inform the next line of action, which could be the declaration of the disappeared policeman as dead, otherwise the search continues.

He stated that if that unfortunate situation arises, then the detectives would change their method from search to investigate murder.
