Madam Martina Appiah-Nyantakyi, Ahafo-Ano North Municipal Chief Executive, has expressed grave concern about lack of interest in vocational training by the youth in the District.

She said though the Municipal Assembly had designed and was implementing various vocational and technical training programmes for the youth to acquire skills, most of them were showing reluctance to participate in the programmes.

The forum was organized by the Governance Issues Forum Network (GIFNet) in collaboration with the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) with the goal of creating a platform for the youth in cocoa-growing communities for the discussion of issues confronting them and find ways to address them.

Madam Appiah-Nyantakyi, said the Assembly had designed programmes to train the youth in Batik making, pastries, bead-making, sewing, plumbing, hairdressing and welding.

The Assembly would also provide start-up capital to enable them grow and develop their businesses.

Madam Appiah-Nyantakyi encouraged the youth to take advantage of the training programmes and develop employable skills that would serve as alternative sources of income aside their farming activities, to help improve their living conditions.

She said the Assembly was also supporting mass production of citrus, coffee, oil palm and cocoa that were already the major crops produced in the municipality.

Mr. Samuel Yakubu, Leader of GIFNet, said the network had helped to address some of the pressing issues facing the youth in the area.

He said the network would continue to mobilize the youth and assist them choose and train in vocations that would provide employment and impact positively on their lives.

Mr. Ewald Garr, Programmes Lead of Community Empowerment for Civic Actions at IDEG, said his outfit was working to promote participatory approach to local governance in Ghana.

He commended GIFNet for their volunteering spirit in-spite of the limited resources for operations.

Some youth at the forum raised concern over high rate of unemployment, which had led to increase in robbery, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy in the area.
