Bagre Dam Spillage: 8 Dead, Over 6,000 Households Displaced

Eight persons have been reported dead while two others are missing, following the spillage of the Bagre dam from Burkina Faso coupled with torrential rains in the Upper East Region.

Reports suggest the deaths may have been caused by flooding and the crossing of overflown rivers in the communities affected by the spillage.

Speaking to CitiNews, NADMO Upper East Regional deputy director-in-charge of operations Paul Wooma said, provisional data shows that the flood has also displaced over 6,000 households.

“The Talensi district recorded the highest death of three, Builsa North district recorded 2 deaths and the Nabdam, Bolga East and Bolga municipal all recorded 1 death each.

However, two persons whose bodies could not be found after they were drowned by the floods in the Builsa North and South districts have been declared missing”.

He also added that: “6,610 houses in 116 communities in 12 districts out of the 15 districts in the region have been either completely or partially collapsed. 140 houses were completely collapsed while 6,470 houses partially collapsed.

Again, a total of 11,326 farmers comprising 7,241 male farmers and 4,085 female farmers have been affected by the floods as it destroyed 11,553.6 hectares of farms”.

Mr. Wooma said the regional branch of NADMO will continue to monitor the situation and liaise with their national headquarters for relief items for the affected persons.

“Our National Director Eric Nana Agyeman-Prempeh has intimated that he is quickly organizing relief for these affected victims.

But before that Upper East Regional Director of NADMO, Jerry Asamani met with a team from UNICEF and there is the need to meet all development actors to provide victims' with relief .”
