Cup of Nations Sam Johnson Optimistic Black Stars Can Win 2019 AFCON In Cameroon
SEP 12, 2018 LISTEN

Former Ghana international, Sam Johnson is convinced the Black Stars can win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The four-time African champions kicked off their qualifying series in a 5:0 win over Ethiopia.

However, Ghana were stunned by the Harambee Stars of Kenya after losing by a lone goal at the Kasarani Stadium in the second round qualifiers.

A Nicholas Opoku own goal in the 40th minute of the game was enough for the Harambee to secure all three points.

However, the former Hearts of Oak and Fenerbahçe S.K. defender is optimistic the Black Stars can end the 34 years trophy-less jinx in Yaoundé in 2019.

"I believe the players can win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations," he told Asempa FM.

"The players must stay focus and concentrate. They must stop underrating teams and I know with that they can win the trophy.

"They must know that is their target and I believe the player will be able to deliver.

Quizzed if Ghana football will improve after the work of the Normalization Committee he said, "I believe so because that is what we are all yearning for."

Ghana are still leading the Group F table despite the upset in Nairobi and will play Seria Loane in a doubleheader in October.

The Black Stars have struggled to win the AFCON after winning it in 1982 in Libya.
