President Akufo-Addo has challenged global ICT firm, Huawei to help drive ICT transformation in Ghana.

He held talks with Senior Vice President of Huawei, Yi Xiang as part of his visit to China.

Huawei has been a strategic ICT partner of government which is leveraging the company’s rich global ICT experience to boost the development of the national ICT infrastructure for Ghana.

The Chinese multinational ICT firm last year signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Ghana to among other things carry out the “Seeds for the Future” programme aimed at transferring ICT knowledge among the Ghanaian youth and nurture skills.

President Akufo-Addo during the talks, which was held at Huawei’s Executive Briefing Center indicated that the friendship between Ghana and China has laid a good foundation for trade between both countries.

He lauded the global ICT provider’s contribution to boosting ICT infrastructure, expanding connectivity, and advancing the digital agenda in Ghana.

Yi Xiang observed that Ghana has been actively advancing an agenda of economic transformation and industrialization.

He noted that the country's business environment is improving, and that has allowed the ICT industry to play a key role in driving economic development.

"Guided by our core values, we have been committed to building a stronger ICT infrastructure in Ghana, aiming to bring digital to more people, homes, and organizations." Yi reiterated.

He revealed that Huawei plans to develop more digital services tailored to local needs, and unlock the potential of ICT to improve people's lives, attract investments inside and outside the country and enhance efficiency.

Huawei has been working with the government and local operators to provide secure, stable, and high-quality communications networks for Ghana since it entered the market in 2001.

As part of its Seeds for the Future program, Huawei has invited students in ICT-related majors from Ghanaian universities each year since 2015 to gain hands-on experience at Huawei headquarters in China.

Founded in 1987, Huawei is a private company fully owned by its employees.

It has more than 180,000 employees and operates in more than 170 countries and regions.
