Converting Katanga, Other KNUST Halls To Mixed Halls Needless – Edem Agbana

Edem Agbana, a Deputy National Youth Organizer aspirant of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has kicked against the conversion of all single sex halls at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to mixed halls, terming it as a “misplaced priority.”

The former SRC president at the University of Ghana (UG) has, therefore, called on the authorities, especially the Vice Chancellor of the Kumasi-based University, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, to get his priorities right and desist from the “needless action” to convert the single sex halls into a mixed hall.

KNUST converted all of its six (6) traditional halls into mixed ones last month.

According to the school’s authorities, Katanga, Unity, Africa, Independence, University, Unity and Queen halls were converted to house both male and female students with the aim of expanding access to female students.

The conversion met strong opposition from a section of the students and past students which ended in a suit against the school at the Kumasi High court.

But in an interview with Piesie Okrah on Power 97.9 FM, Agbana who was once a student leader indicated the University was bedeviled with myriad of challenges which should be attended to, and not the conversion of single sex halls to mixed halls.

“Converting Conti Hall is not one of the topmost priority for the University,” Agbana added.

To him, a past student leader, Edem said he understood and appreciated the “enormous benefits of such halls to the development of the University,” and stressed he would advocate for such Halls to be maintaine, “any day.”

Condemning the school authorities for the act, the youth activist encouraged the student leadership to continue to engage with the authorities to bring finality to the issue.
