The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister designate, Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie has stated that the influx of telenovelas series especially ‘Kumkum bagya’ on televiosion is killing the growth of the creative arts industry in the country.

Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie, who also doubles as the Member of Parliament for Asuanfo North has called on the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Arts to as a matter of urgency place some restrictions to the airing of these foreign drama series that are translated into local languages.

“It is time to showcase the rich cultural heritage of our country (Ghana) and shun these China and India telenovelas on our screens” he said.

The Minister disclosed this to Ark News when Chief Executive Director of the Centre for National Culture (CNC), Madam Janet Edna Nyame paid a courtesy call on him at his office.

For some time now there has been a conversation on the influx of Telenovelas on tv which led to some Ghanaian actors demonstrating against the situation in Kumasi and proceeded to submit a petition to Otumfuor Osei Tutu II.

According to Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie, this rapid growth of pop television is distracting students from studies, while a lot of businesses are on the verge of collapse.

“I have ordered my staff at the Regional Coordinating Council [RCC] not to watch kumkum bagya during working time” he stated.
