General News Parties Involved In Vigilantism Should Be Punished By Voters
SEP 6, 2018 LISTEN

A security analyst has charged Ghanaians to punish any political party that endorses activities of vigilante groups and engages their services.

Adam Bonaa said the emergence of such groups for the two main parties shows a waning trust in the nation’s security services.

“If you are a political party which endorses them, then we [voters] must punish you. If it is an internal party thing then those voting should also punish the leader.

“In the case of a party that wholeheartedly endorse it, then the nation should punish you by voting you out or making sure you stay in opposition,” he told Emefa Apawu on Newsnight, Wednesday.

The Security Warehouse Limited CEO's comments follow a vehement defence of the activities of vigilante groups by the General Secretary of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

According to the NDC scribe, the emergence of the vigilante groups like the Hawks, Dragons- affiliated to the NDC- is only natural given what the country has gone through in the hands of vigilante groups affiliated to the NPP.

Asiedu Nketia told Joy News the emergence of groups like Hawks is "an appropriate natural response" to the failure of the Akufo-Addo government to rein in its party vigilante groups.

"I endorse it fully", the NDC mastermind refused to condemn the Hawks who emerged at the Ashanti regional congress last Saturday.

Other groups include 'The Dragons' based in the Brong Ahafo region and 'The Lions' based in the Eastern region.

This development does not impress me Mr Bonaa at all.

“I am also surprised because for this to come from no mean person but the General Secretary of the NDC should give us all a cause of worry.

“He is doing what one would describe as an eye for an eye issue [between NDC and NPP] in which the ordinary person will suffer. It is needless, it is uncalled for and so I hope the appropriate authorities will rise up,” he said.

Mr Bonaa expects the national security to do better than it is currently doing in handling the security issues of the country.

According to him, the national security has been infiltrated by some of the people who find themselves with the vigilante groups.

“So I was hoping that by now it would have purged itself of the situation where some of them find themselves involved in other things,” he noted.

The security expert said he does not foresee the two dominating parties giving up their vigilante groups.

“I have done works on the vigilante groups especially the Hawks and some of the emerging groups in the NDC in the last few months financed by some party faithful just like we have Invincible and Delta Forces in the NPP,” he said.

Mr Bonaa believes this shows there is no trust when it comes to state-sponsored security services including the police, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and national security.

He called on the peace council and the clergy to come together to mediate with the political parties to let them know the nation is treading on a dangerous path with such groups.
