UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday urged "all parties" in Mauritania to contribute to "peaceful and credible elections" the following day.
The UN chief "is closely following developments in Mauritania on the eve of the legislative, regional and municipal elections scheduled for 1 September," a statement from his office said.
Guterres "urges all parties to ensure the holding of elections that are peaceful and credible and allow for the participation of all interested stakeholders," the statement said.
"He calls on all parties to ensure respect of the rule of law and that the human rights of all Mauritanians are upheld," it added.
The elections are a test for the regime of President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz less than a year from the presidential vote in mid-2019.
Aziz, 61, came to power in a coup in 2008. He was elected in 2009 and again in 2014 for a second five-year term.
