Ghanaians have been urged to shun foreign products as part of efforts at promoting locally made products to enhance the economy.

The local business community has also been asked to avoid labeling made in Ghana products with foreign tags to shore up confidence in local products.

The Vice Chairman for the Ashanti/Brong-Ahafo Regional branch of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Mr. Kwesi Nyamekye, who made the call, stressed that it is time for Ghanaians to change their strong taste and perception about foreign products, so as to strengthen the local economy.

Mr. Nyamekye was addressing a section of the press in Sunyani, ahead of the 2018 Industry and Technology Fair (INDUTECH), to be hosted by the Ashanti/Brong-Ahafo regional branches of the association at the Heroes Park, located at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, from October 24 to October 28, 2018.

The AGI Vice Chair said: “Ghanaians should change their perception about foreign products and rather have a strong taste for made in Ghana products,” adding, “most of the local products are of high quality compared to the foreign ones, and that, Ghana stands to benefit if local products are patronized.”

Mr. Kwesi Nyamekye gave assurance that the association will pursue measures to promote made in Ghana products, and called for stakeholder support in that direction.

He encouraged local businesses to patronise the fair, which focuses on bringing Ghanaian companies and their foreign counterparts together for business linkages and promotion of general goods and services.

This year's trade fair is under the theme: “Accelerating industry growth in Ghana, exhibiting what we have,” partnered by the Ministry of Trade and Industries and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Government commitment

During the launch of the fair in Kumasi earlier in the year, the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, reaffirmed the government's commitment to implement effective business policies to create a sustainable business environment for local as well as international companies. “The government of Ghana is committed to strengthening business opportunities for private sector enterprises to accelerate economic growth and development across the region,” Mr. Assibey-Antwi said.

According to him, the “Ghana Beyond Aid” strategy focuses on attracting private sector companies that are crucial for the country's business growth and ensuring regional boost.

The 2018 fair, which marks the 60th Anniversary of the Association of Ghana Industries, also aims to set up new business opportunities and mutual connection in the country.
