Police in Ashanti Region has arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Dess FM journalist in the Bekwai municipality.

The suspect, Philip Akumaning, confessed the murder, according to police, after he was picked up at Petransa in the Asante Akyem Central District over the weekend.

The victim, 30-year-old Ama Adjeiwaa Kodie, was found stabbed to death in her room at Bekwai in April 2018.

Ama Adjeiwaa Kodie also doubled as a front desk executive at Dess Radio in Bekwai. She had joined the station in November 2017.

Addressing journalists in Kumasi, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Fred Adu Anim, said the suspect went into hiding in Accra after the murder of the deceased journalist who he was living with.

“A misunderstanding ensued between, the suspect and the deceased, when the latter tried to end the relationship with the suspect.”

“The suspect, who became aggrieved, attacked the deceased with a double-edged knife and inflicted multiple knife wounds on the chest, in between the breast, left hand and right thigh leading to her death,” DCOP Anim narrated.

After the murder, the suspect bolted to Assin Fosu in the Central Region and later to Teshie in Accra.

But on August 28, with the help of the military, “the suspect was traced and arrested at Petransa Asante Akyem, where he had attended a funeral,” DCOP Anim said.

“In his caution statement, he admitted the offense of murder and subsequently led police to Assin Fosu in the Central Region where the knife that he used in killing the deceased was retrieved.”

He was arraigned earlier on Monday and has since been remanded.
