NAT Threatens To Strike If 80 Months Arrears Are Not Paid Within 72 Hours

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (NAT) are threatening to lay down their tools in the next three days (72 hours) if the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) fails to release their 80 Months contributory arrears to its members.

The move by NAT follows a recent demand by National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) who also accused the NPRA of playing politics with their funds.

The General Secretary for NAT, David Ofori Acheampong at a press conference yesterday threatened a nationwide strike in the coming days if their request is not met. He indicated that they have waited for far too long for the NPRA to pay them their arrears but they have not had any positive feedback. Hence their decision to strike.

“We believe that we have waited for far too long and it appears that our patience is running out”, David Ofori Acheampong said.

NAT has also come up with some strategies in a move to ensure the arrears owed them are paid to them;

“The following are the strategies we are going to adapt to get the bonds released. We will ask the trust board to stop paying fees to the NPRA if they fail to release the bonds. After the 72 hour automaton, we would embark on a sit down strike for the number of days that it will take the NPRA to release the bonds to our custodial banks”, NAT general secretary outlined.

NAT however says two weeks after the reopening of schools for the first term in the 2018/2019 academic year, they will proceed for work to rule for another two weeks. Additionally, they are accusing the NPRA for turning itself into a fund manager and a custodian if their funds at the same time. This they say has compelled them to take the above mentioned strategies.
