Familiarisation Tour: Don't let partisan politics divide us - MCE to constituents

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region, Mr. Ernest Kofie has advised the chiefs and people of the area not to allow partisan politics to divide them so that in unity they could join hands to initiate development programmes that would improve their living standards.

Mr. Ernest Kofie made the above utterance during his second familiarisation tour since his appointment as MCE by President Akufo-Addo last year.

The tour sought to identify problems confronting the people as well as initiate strategies to solve them by bringing local governance to the doorstep of the people in various constituencies he visited.

The tour is to bring local governance to the doorstep of the people and to listen to the problems of the individual towns in the Municipality.

Some of the communities visited so far include; Jaway Wharf, Ekpu, Atwebanso, New Edobo and Old Edobo.

The problems facing these communities include poor roads network, toilet facilities, electricity and the bad state of some school buildings.

Addressing chiefs and people of Ekpu over the weekend in a mini durbar, the MCE expressed a deal of appreciation on behalf of President Akufo-Addo and the entire NPP party to the community for their immense support during the 2016 general elections which brought the party into power.

He gave the assurance that he would run an open-door administration and welcome constructive criticisms from all persons in the district irrespective of political affiliation.

He cautioned that he would not tolerate people with spurious complaints about others as such practice often brings about division which would not augur well for the progress of the area.

"I urge you all to do away with partisan politics and support all government programmes", he said.

He asked the community to rally behind President Akufo-Addo's Free SHS flagship program and educate their children to pass well at the JHS level and enjoy the program.

"The Free SHS has come to stay and is going to help all of us and not only NPP members, we shouldn't do politics with this laudable programme and let me say that the newly introduced Double Track System is also very laudable and will help more students to be enrolled and let me say that last academic year, the Free SHS program increased economic activities in Jomoro market places and I know this coming academic year too, the economic activities will increase more", he emphasized.

He said that the Double Track System would be helping some SHS to enroll more students this academic year and added that the government can't wait till infrastructures are put up in all Senior High Schools in Ghana.

"We can't wait for the infrastructure deficit to be solved completely before we can implement this Free SHS, no way, my government has vision and I urge you all to give deaf ears to some propagandists who wish the collapse of this policy", he emphasized.

He, however, urged the chiefs and people of the area to come together to help the government in all spheres of endeavours for developmental goals as the government cannot do it alone.

He used the occasion to appeal to the chiefs and people to nurture peace and at all circumstances create a peaceful atmosphere.

He also used the opportunity to advise the youth not to involve themselves in gambling activities.

He also urged the youth not to engage themselves in drugs such as tramadol and 'wee'.

He promised to build an ultramodern toilet facility for the community and urged the chief and his people to release land for the project to take off.

The MCE also pledged his total commitment to lobby from GNPC to tare the township roads for them.

He pledged to donate dual desks for the Basic School in the area.

The Acting Chief of the area, Abusuakpanyinli Archer Kwaw thanked the MCE for visiting them to know their concerns.

He used the occasion to charge the MCE and Assembly to find a lasting solution to the impasse between them and the police over the alleged death of one man who died at Half Assini police cell last year.

He pleaded with the Assembly to open the Artisan Village Workshop in the community which was established by the previous government to train the youth in the Municipality.

The Assembly Member of the area, Hon. Peter Angate appealed to the Assembly and police to beef up security in the area to curb the thievery activities going on in the area.

"We are not safe at all, everyday people come and steal our things and just recently, some unknown thieves came to steal all my clothes and monies and as I'm speaking I don't have penny to buy food and also I have only one shirt that am using", said.

He pleaded with the Assembly to extend electricity to some areas of the town to beef up security for them.

At New Edobo Community, Abusuakpanyinli Nwonha EZane appealed to the MCE to come to their aid and complete their ongoing Community Guest House.

He also used the opportunity to appeal the MCE and Assembly to supply them with electricity meters to solve the problem of two or more households using one meter.

Abusuakpanyinli Ezane pleaded with with the Assembly to give the brilliant and needy students in the area with scholarship to further their education at the tertiary levels in the country.

He also urged the Assembly to provide a public place of convenience to promote sanitation.

He pleaded with the NPP government to support the Basic School of the area with a School Feeding Program to motivate the pupils to have keen interest in education.

The MCE responded to their needs and promised to support them.

He pledged to liaise with the MP of the area to provide them with School Feeding Program as they have requested.

He urged, "My doors are open for all and I urge you to visit my office for support".

At Old Edobo Community, the Tufuhene of the area, Nana Joseph Namin pleaded with the Assembly to provide them a public place of convenience to promote sanitation.

He urged the Assembly to reshape the community's street roads to ease movement of goods and services.

The MCE gave a very encouraging response to their request and promised to work assiduously with their request.

Water has been the community problem, the MCE expressed over the dysfunctional water treatment plant constructed by Tullow Oil Company during the era of NDC administration and pleaded with Tullow to come and fix the project for the community.

He used the opportunity to urge the people living with disabilities in the area to register for the Disability Fund and get some relief.

Nana Atwebanso appealed to the Assembly to establish a befitting chief palace for the community to give good image for them.

He said the youth of the area are unemployed and pleaded with the Assembly to provide the youth with employment to cater for their families.

He requested for the School Feeding Program for the school of the area and scholarship for the brilliant and needy students in the area to further their education at the tertiary levels.

He commended the MCE for being the first ever MCE to visit their community to interact with them and know their challenges.

He used the occasion to urged the followers of the MCE to support him and stop the pulling him down syndrome and also pray for him always to work hard to bring development to the Assembly.

The MCE donated 30 bags of cement to them to start their chief palace and promised to support them to build it.

He called on the people especially the farmers to engage themselves coconut plantation and promised to give them coconut seedlings that take only shortest time to mature.

He promised to give them street bulbs to beef up security in the night and urged the parents to invest their resources into their children's education.

He used the occasion to educated them Food Screening exercise and charged the food vendors and sellers to involve themselves into the exercise to prevent communicable diseases.

He said that his door is always opened for their views, opinions, and suggestions that will help the Municipality to develop rapidly.

He advised the youth to refrain from deviant behaviors that will affect their future.

He urged the farmers to embrace the government's Planting for Food and Jobs flagship program to better their livelihoods.

Some of the Chiefs in the communities presented foodstuffs and sheep to the MCE and his entourage.

The MCE was accompanied by staff of the Assembly led by the Municipal Coordinator, Mr. Joseph Frimpong Kojo Nayoo, NPP Jomoro Constituency Executives led by their Chairman, Mr. Simon Amoah, the media, among others.
