The Independent Examination Committee (IEC) of the General Legal Council (GLC) has scheduled a supplementary entrance examination for admission into the professional law course of the Ghana School of Law (GSL) in October 2018.

As scheduled, the examination will take place on Friday, August 17, at 10:00 AM the same centers at the University of Ghana, Legon.

It is planned to be a 45 minute exam, comprising a single compulsory question that will come from any of the 9 stated subjects:

  • Law of Contract
  • Law of Tort
  • Criminal Law
  • Law of Immovable Property
  • Ghana Constitutional Law
  • Ghana Legal System and Methods
  • Equity and Succession
  • Company Law
  • Commercial Law

This comes on the back of reports alleging that the last entrance examination organised by the same examination body on Friday, July 27, had leaked.

According the reports, the compulsory question and a marking scheme were circulated among some students, especially those who wrote the paper at the New N Block and the Central Cafeteria of the University of Ghana.

Pressure has since been mounting on the Ghana's General Legal Council to investigate the veracity or otherwise of the allegations and act on same.

U.S-based Ghanaian lawyer, Professor Kweku Asare and Director of Mountcrest University College, Kwaku Ansah-Asare have both called for the cancellation of the results and the scraping of the General Legal Council.

The Ghana Bar Association has also described as “unfortunate and disturbing” the allegations and called for a full scale investigations.

Aggrieved students on the matter have also petitioned the Chief Justice to investigate the matter and dissolve the Independence Examination Committee.

The General Legal Council has not made any public statement on the matter until now when a statement has been issued to the effect that there will be a supplementary entrance examination.

The statement does not indicate the reasons for the organization of a supplementary exam but stated among other things the following guidelines:

“Only candidates who applied and sat for the last examination on 27th July 2018 are eligible to write the Supplementary Entrance Examination.

“All registered applicants are expected to use the Examination Index Numbers previously provided to them by the Ghana School of Law.

“Candidates are reminded that the decision of the General Legal Council in respect of the published results of the Entrance Examination shall be final.”
