Okyeman Youth Association Endorses Proper Bauxite Mining In Atiwa

By Okyeman Youth Association
Press Release Okyeman Youth Association Endorses Proper Bauxite Mining In Atiwa
JUL 31, 2018 LISTEN

Okyeman Youth Association (OYA) finds it very laudable the idea of the Nana Akufo Addo led NPP government to explore bauxite resources in the various parts of the country for the ultimate benefit of all Ghanaians. The Youth Association subsequently endorses bauxite exploration in a manner that is friendly to the environment and also protects the other components of the Atiwa Forest Ecosystem.

The youth group is therefore elated and relieved by assurances from the minister of lands and natural resources John Peter Amewu that bauxite in the Atiwa Forest would be mined in a manner that does not endanger the important resources of the forest such as the Birm, Densu and Ayensu rivers learning from the Australian shining example of mining without causing destruction to river bodies.

As the youth group in Okyeman, we are of the firm belief that the development of the Bauxite mines and its related refinery will go a long way of improving infrastructure not only in the catchment area but the entire country and also create thousands of jobs for the teeming unemployed youth in the country. We assert that it is only people with self-seeking agenda who will kick against such a laudable initiative to open up the Atiwa area. We consequently distance Okyeman Youth Association from Concerned Citizens of Atiwa Landscape who are surrogates of AROCHA GHANA.

OYA deems it very hypocritical on the part of AROCHA Ghana and its surrogates to find their voice now in the wake of the proposed Atiwa bauxite development as they were dead silent in the days of galamsey which saw the virtual destruction of the Birim river until the restoration of some sanity into the mining space by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo on his assumption of the presidency.OYA however urges stakeholders in the affected communities to negotiate for a fair share of the benefits accruing from the bauxite development instead of kicking against the entire exploration of the resource.
