Midland saga: I will go to court to defend 'commando' police officer - Akua Donkor

The controversial leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor has opined that she would go to court and defend the 'commando' police officer, Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor if sacked and taken to court for beating a nursing mother.

The brutality was meted out to the customer with a baby by Frederick Amanor Skalla, a Police Officer at the Shiashie branch of Midland Savings and Loans on Thursday, July 19, 2018.

The Policeman who allegedly assaulted the said customer of the Midland Savings and Loans in a banking hall has been arrested on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.

The police officer is currently being held at police headquarters assisting investigations.

There has been public outrage after a footage of the said Police officer in uniform beating to pulp the helpless nursing mother emerged on social media platforms.

The 1:26 seconds amateur video shows the officer, who had a gun with him, hitting the woman on the head repeatedly and slapping her at a point, despite a desperate attempt by an unidentified man to separate them.

The woman was seen shouting amidst a desperate attempt to free herself from the grips of the officer.

Meanwhile, the Management of Midland Savings and Loans has condemned the assault of the customer by the Police officer.

It appears not everyone sympathises with the elderly woman, Patience Osarfo who had the beatings of her life when a policeman at the Midland Savings and Loans bank directed his fury at her and beat her to a pulp Thursday.

But the controversial GFP leader, Akua Donkor thinks the police officer is being victimized for simply meting out his duties and ‘protecting’ the bank from being robbed.

She is captured in an audio, registering her displeasure about what she describes as the ‘unfair’ treatment being given to the Lance Corporal Frederick Amanor after his act. Madam Donkor says she has evidence to prove that the victim, Patience is a thief who was merely posing as a desperate nursing mother just so she could observe happenings at the bank and alert her accomplice armed robbers to execute their operation when there was less activity going on at the bank.

She hinted that she is ready to submit her evidence to court if Lance Corporal Amanor is sacked by the IGP and taken to court for prosecution.

“I will even go and bail him if he is sacked. I want to know which court the IGP intends to take him to, I will go there personally, surrender the evidence I have and fully support the policeman”.

According to her, using women as accomplices is a tactic which robbers have adopted to facilitate their operations considering that they are weaker and easier to believe and consider.

“When things are going on and you don’t know, be open to learn. Women lately negotiate with armed robbers and pull stunts on banks. She said she was withdrawing money, how much money was she taking so much so that she had to spend a week at the bank? It’s obvious she was sent by robbers, it’s what they do. Some women fake pregnancy and labour by putting clothes on their tummies to trick drivers by the roadside and get their accomplices to rob them when they pick them”.

She believes the woman with her two-month-baby should have been given more beatings than she received at the bank because she deserved it.

“The beatings they gave her were not enough, they should have beaten her even more because she is a thief. That’s what the ladies do now and I have evidence to back it. I don’t know either of the two people; the policeman nor the woman but I’m telling you the facts on the ground. They plan, get to the targeted location, wait till there are just a few persons and then they execute their plans”.
