Tano South Municipality Marks Senior Citizens’ Day

A reception to entertain aged has been held at Bechem to mark the 58th Republic Day Anniversary Celebration.

The day which is termed as Senior Citizens’ day is celebrated in the Municipality to pay tribute to contributions of older generation towards the socio-economic development of the country.

In an opening address at the Residency of the Tano South Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Osei Sekyere Bota the former DCE of the Municipality during Ex-president John Agyekum Kuffour warmly welcomed all present to the function. He used the occasion to inform older generation to continue to contribute their quota towards the development of the municipality and the Nation as whole. He said the illegal mining activities destroys the water bodies and for that matter called on participants to inform the illegal miners to eschew from the practice to make the water bodies serves its intended purposes.

In another development, Hon. Bukari Zakari Anaba, the former DCE of the Municipality under the leadership of Ex- president John Dramani Mahama said the creation of the Ahafo Region is dear to the heart of the chief and other residents in the Municipality. He called on the participants to inform the legible voters to take part in the referendum exercise whenever the programme starts to make the Ahafo Region secures eighty percent (80%) of the total votes to make the electoral commission created the region to bring more development.

The MCE for Tano South Hon. Collins Offinam Takyi thanked all for honouring the invitation to attend the programme and expressed the felicities of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana and commander in-chiefs of Arm Forces to all members present. He said the contributions of the older generation made Ghana attained the Republic Day. He said in the olden days, the older generation was using communal labour to embark on the development projects and complaint bitterly that the Ghana’s democratic nature is making the Assembly unable to organize communal labour to do the development projects in the municipality.

On the Assembly’s fee fixing, he said management of the Assembly has made extensive consultation with both the honourable Assembly members and the stakeholders to decide new rate reasonable to be paid by the taxpayers and urged political parties to avoid politicising the newly proposed rate. He used the occasion to informed the participants that a number of policies and programmes have been put in place by government to improve the lives of people and called all political leaders to support the programme to make it effectively implemented.

Hon. Takyi said most of the forest reserve in the municipality has been depleted through the activities of illegal chain saw operation and hinted that the Tano South Municipal Assembly is implementing tree planting exercise to protect the degraded environment. He informed the participants to report the illegal chain saw operators to police.

On the government flagship programme of one district, one factory, Hon. Takyi said two benevolent have submitted proposals to Assembly to be considered to enabling them establish the factories in the municipality to create jobs for the younger generation and thanked Nana Fosu Gyeabour Akoto II, the Omanhene of Bechem Traditional Council and his wife for the leading role exhibited toward the creation of the Ahafo Region.

In a closing remark, Nana Fosu Gyeabour Akoto II , the Omanhene of Bechem Traditional Area who chaired the function thanked the MCE and the Member of Parliament for Tano South Constituency for their effective role exhibited to make the South District to be elevated to the Municipal status. He used the occasion to inform all present to advised the younger generation not to throw rubbish indiscriminately to pollute an environment and urged the older generation to avoid eating fatty foods to enable them enjoy longer life expectancy.
