A political scientist at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their absence from the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) conference last Saturday.

In an interview with Joy News, he said the action of the leading opposition party must be condemned and that what the NDC did by absenting themselves from the conference is unprecedented. He described it as a bogus practice that is not worthy of emulation by any other political party.

He said: “Whatever their reasons may be, it is unacceptable and it is not something that must be countenanced.”

Professor Gyampo also said that Ghana has been witnessing a situation where political parties attend each other's congress since the commencement of the Fourth Republic. According to him, such events provide room for opponents to come together to share ideas to move the country forward.

“That is when you have other political parties coming there to show solidarity and give messages that show that even though we at each other's throat, we are together…it's a way of cushioning us against democratic relapse and conflict,” he added.

However, the NDC has attributed their absence from the conference to the mourning of their late party member and former vice president of Ghana, Paa Kwesi Amisah-Arthur.
