JUN 25, 2018 LISTEN

National giants, Achimota School, may just be the underdogs in Monday morning’s one eighth National Science and Maths Quiz contest, some pundits have predicted.

Although the 94-year-old school is a consistent participator at the nationals of the NSMQ, today, they face an elimination threat from Tamale Senior High and Apam Senior High.

Tamale SHS comes into the contest as a seeded school owing to their great performance in 2017 and they will be prepared to better that performance today.

The interesting part is that Mohammed Yunus Maltiti, who is one of the contestants for Tamale SHS contested last year as a second-year student so now that he is coming in as a final year student, he will prove to be a talisman for his team.

Apam Senior High, coming in from the prelims scored 54 points to blow off Kintampo SHS and Christ the King SHS. With that, magnificent performance and the fact that not very many schools have reached the 50 mark in this year’s competition, Apam does bring some spice to Monday morning’s contest.

Two-time winners, Achimota School, however, come into the contest also from the prelims with 44 points, quite appreciable but paltry considering their strength and that of the opponents they came against [Atebubu SHS and St Louis SHS].

With that record and that of their opponents, and without prejudice to the fact that this is a different stage, the two schools do have a slight edge over Achimota School.

The contest comes off Monday morning at the R.S. Amegashie auditorium at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS).

The two other contests also promise to be entertaining considering that West African Senior High also come in with two finalists who managed to get the school to a seeded position last year as second-year students.

They come up against Konongo-Odumase SHS and Kadjebi Asato SHS .

The third contest is set to be the cracker for the day with seeded Aggrey Memorial SHS coming up against Sonrise SHS from the Volta Regional capital, Ho.

The latter dealt a heavy blow Opoku Ware SHS who threatened their [OWASS] campaign but sailed through as a high scoring losing school.

Sonrise will want to keep up that performance so Aggrey Memorial should expect a bloody fight Monday evening.

Kumasi SHTS who come in with 29 points from the prelims as a high scoring losing school will be the underdogs.
