The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged basic school pupils and Ghanaians in general to adopt clean environmental practices to rid their surroundings of filth. The call was made by the Techiman Municipal Director of the Commission, Mr. Jobila Mohammed Zakari on Free Fm, a local radio station in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region during a dialogue with selected basic schools in the Techiman Municipality. Mr. Zakari bemoaned bad environmental practices in the country adding that the economic and social cost such practices cannot be overemphasized. He said dirty environment breeds diseases which could be prevented if the environment was kept clean.

Adding her voice to the discussion, Owoahene Claudian expressed the need for hand washing with soap and running water after vising the toilet to prevent cholera infection and the spread of same. She reiterated that proper hand washing was vital for the prevention of food contamination and other infections. On his part, Nuetey Bismark said cholera and other diseases could be prevented if the environment is kept clean and urge Ghanaians to ensure clean environment.

Participating schools in the dialogue included Ahenbronoso Seventh Day Adventist Junior High School B and Little Angels Preparatory and Junior High School. The dialogue was part of activities to mark this year’s Citizenship Week celebration under the theme “My Environment and You” which was supported by the European Union.
