NADMO Outlines Flood Prone Areas In Central Region

The Central Regional secretariat of the National Disaster and Management Organization (NADMO), has announced some safe zones for residents in the region following Monday’s downpour.

According to NADMO , six out of the 20 districts in the Central Region have suffered the devastating effect of Monday’s rains.

Many properties were destroyed and a few casualties recorded in the region after the heavy rains.

Among the casualties was a four-year-old kindergarten pupil who died when a dilapidated building collapsed on her and other persons at Assin Darman.

Five other victims have been admitted at the St. Xavier Hospital at Assin Foso for treatment.

Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, the Central Region’s Public Relations Officer for NADMO, Eric Arthur, said some safe zones had been marked as places of shelter for persons who may suffer displacements due to the floods.

He said flood-prone areas identified in Cape Coast included Nkanfoa village, Eyifua, Kakomdo, Duakor, Amamoma and Adisadel area, especially the post office area. others are North Ola and Ameen Shangai areas.

On safe areas for Cape Coast residents, Eric Arthur said for residents around Cape Coast, the Cape Coast Town Hall, Victoria Park, Wesley Methodist Church, Cape Coast Castle, Philip Quaicoe Boys and Girls' Schools, St Augustine's College and the Cape Coast Technical University area were all safe zones identified by NADMO in case they are in distress during a flood situation.

Mr. Arthur pointed out that the Kasoa New Market, Nyame Bekyere, Dogotekokpe, Rock City, Bentum City, American Town, CP Last Stop, Walter Mens City and Ayigbe Town were flood-prone areas where floods could wreck havoc to residents.

Places at Kasoa where people could seek refuge, according to NADMO, are Oduponkpehe Cluster of Schools, St. Mary's Anglican Complex, St. Martha's Catholic School, and Ofankor M.A. School among others.

NADMO has however assured residents in the region that it has put in places measures to prevent or deal with disasters when they occur.

Meanwhile, Mr. Arthur has admitted that NADMO did not have adequate relief materials for persons who may need them after a disaster, and appealed to benevolent Ghanaians to help them with more resources.

He also urged the public to adhere to various safety regulations to minimize the effects of the flooding, adding that NADMO officials and volunteers must be contacted promptly in cases of disaster.
