Accra, June 20, (UPI/GNA) - Approximately 5,000 pigs were killed on Tuesday after a barn fire broke out in Ohio, officials said.

The incident occurred at the Straathoff Swine Farm in Fayette County, Ohio, located about 40 miles south of Columbus.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said the fire spread quickly in the barn facilities and firefighters from several counties, including Fayette, Pickaway, Ross, Highland, and Greene, were on the scene to put out the flames.

"The fire spread quickly throughout the facility causing intense heat and extremely heavy smoke, making it difficult for fire personnel to battle the interior of the fire," FCSO said in a statement.

The pigs were trapped inside the barn and were burned alive, WCMH-TV reported.

At least one firefighter was injured while putting out the fire. The firefighter suffered an arm injury and was treated at a nearby hospital.

No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal's Office.
