Nyantakyi Must See Anas' Video Before Decision To Resign – MP

It would be unfair to ask embattled Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi to resign when he hasn’t seen the video citing him for corruption, Sekondi Member of Parliament has argued.

Andrews Agyapa Mercer says although the pieces of information are compelling enough for GFA boss, Kwasi Nyantakyi, to vacate his position ultimately, he should be given the benefit of watching the video first hand before taking a decision to step aside instead of bowing to public pressure.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP made his remarks in reaction to a GFA statement released Thursday, in reaction to Tiger Eye PI’s undercover investigative piece which has allegedly cited GFA officials, referees and some Ghana Sports Authority officials for various acts of corruption.

Mr Nyantakyi, for instance, is seen in the video negotiating a deal between a supposed investor by which the investor will gain undue advantage in securing contracts in the Ghanaian political space.

Many Ghanaians, including some Parliamentarians, have called for Nyantakyi to resign and save the face of GFA as an institution.

“The GFA was not provided with an opportunity to watch the premiering of the documentary as it was neither provided with an advanced copy of the said documentary nor furnished with tickets by Tiger Eye PI to watch the airing…” the statement said in part.

“To this end, we believe it’s only fair and proper that Tiger Eye furnishes us with the said documentary…enable us forward it to the appropriate quarters for further investigations,” it added.

Mr Mercer told Roland Walker on the AM Show on Joy News Channel Thursday that, this request is not out of place.

“If the man hasn’t been given an opportunity to view it, how is he going to make an assessment,” he asked. “It is only fair. Natural justice,” he stated.

The MP, however, stated that in his view GFA boss must leave office in the long term.

“From what I heard, I don’t think his occupancy of the position is tenable…,” he said.

Opposition MP, Rockson Dafeamekpor who was also on the show disagreed with Mr Mercer saying that Nyantakyi should have tendered in his resignation by now.

“My worry is that he shouldn’t be sitting on his seat this morning. Based on the content of the video that has been made public, Nyantakyi should be leaving office until his name is cleared. He should step aside,” the South Dayi MP said.

Meanwhile, the premiere of the investigative documentary continues Thursday, June 7, and then Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi will have their turn.
