Opinion Repair The Nima Drainage System: An Open Letter To The President Of The Republic Of Ghana
JUN 3, 2018 LISTEN

Sir,
While highly appreciating your honourable’s leadership for the development of the nation, the undersigned would like to point out some of the difficulties faced by the people of Ayawaso area covering Ayawaso North and East Municipal for your honour’s kind attention and for the development of the Nima Drainage of these areas.

That, the Nima Drainage System was constructed by the Brazilian contractors during and the completion of the first phase of the project. But, to our surprise, the said drainage project is currently at a standstill for the past two (2) years as a result of which there are many portions with erosions leading to the collapse of houses, serving as a prone for dumping of waste which breeds mosquitoes and causing harm to the health of the residents. The state of the drainage is on a ticking-time bomb with an aspect of it blocked which causes blockade to the flow of the rain waters coming from afar leading to flooding.

As the Government is not taking up any step for the completion of the drainage system, the residents are always subjected to force labours to clear waste for the easy flow of the rain waters which is very risky and not even effective, dumping of waste by other residents on both sides of the drainage every time during and after rains for the sake of the safety of their homes not collapsing through erosion..

As such, your honour’s kind attention is sought and compelled to question why this drainage- one of the most important drainage system project was not completed, why the stoppage of work and if the contract was terminated, why should it be so and if not , when will the project be completed?

Therefore, if no steps are taken up for the special completion of the drainage system from October 2018, the youths of the area will be compelled to close the main NIMA AND KANDA Highways and economic blockade will be imposed indefinitely on the Nima Highway which is connected to the banks and the main Nima market and commercial vehicles as the Government, is more interested on the state of economic activities in the Nima environs but neglecting the lifelines of its people due to the dangers coming from the drainage system.

Yours sincerely,
ABDUL GAFFAR SALIFU
A YOUTH ACTIVIST
