As the plot thickens, the Akufo-Addo government fears its own ghost...

Folks, just when we think that we are geared to see Ghana taken to a new level under an Akufo-Addo administration that won political power on the basis of fighting corruption in Ghana, happenings have quickly proved otherwise.

Those lined up to help Akufo-Addo fight against corruption are themselves arrayed as corrupt. What next?

Too many scandalous happenings under the watch of Akufo-Addo which can't be swept under the rug are demoralizing. Too much going on to make the Ghanaian voter wonder a lot.

kufo-Addo began his rule by putting in place structures to confirm his resolve to fight against corruption, even as he turns a blind eye to happenings in his inner circle. Talk about the sterile Office of the Special Prosecutor and the ill-considered use of the EOCO for political persecution or other arm-twisting moves to squeeze the blood out of supposed NDC elements in the public and private sector. A mere misplaced political stupidity!!

Akufo-Addo has created the impression that he is capable of eradicating corruption in Ghana, which explains his co-opting of journalists of Kweku Baako’s type to latch on to. Much has been done and said by Kweku Baako to shore up support for Akufo-Addo. But the devil in the transaction isn’t dead. It has actively emerged to play its part, especially at the time that Kweku Baako has used his team to focus on happenings that expose Team Akufo-Addo as much as it doesn’t want to be revealed.

We are particularly interested in happenings regarding the investigation by Anas Aremeyaw Anas that has turned out to be singing the death knell that Akufo-Addo hates to hear.

This singular effort by Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Kweku Baako (a known and unrepentant ventriloquist for Akufo-Addo) to help Akufo-Addo fight corruption in Ghana has quickly turned into the worst comedy of errors that Ghanaians have least expected.

It’s not as if Anas’ work is new. When he exposed the deep corruption in the judiciary, John Mahama acted conscientiously to get the corrupt judges punished. They fought their case but lost.

In this era of Akufo-Addo, Anas has come out with the second expose, featuring corruption in the sports industry, which is assuming horrible dimensions just because interested parties imprecated are on their heels to fight against him.

All that Kennedy Agyapong has been doing to undermine Anas is known. Now, we have a new twist to it all as reported: (See https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Anas-took-50-000-bribe-to-drop-an-expos-on-me-Tamale-chief-656890).

This revelation raises eyebrows. And many questions too. It is very serious and must not be overlooked.

• What was this Tamale chief thinking in the circumstance? Did he do anything wrong for which he would easily part with that huge sum of money (Dollars and not Cedis) at the time to avoid being punished for the wrong that he might have done his people and Ghana? Isn’t he ashamed?

• If he knew that he hadn’t done anything wrong, why did he bribe Anas?
• Did he know at the time of bribing Anas that he was doing anything wrong for which he should be punished by the laws of Ghana? And why would he go that way and come out now, hoping to be seen as a “saint,’ and not a criminal?
• Why did he choose to bribe Anas to avoid being exposed and punished as such?
• Why has he kept mute all this while? And why is he coming out now?
• Does he have the documentary evidence to prove his case? If so, what does he intend to do? Sue Anas for defrauding him or push his complaint into the dossier that Kennedy Agyapong is building on Anas to discredit him?

And many more questions!! What will the Akufo-Addo government benefit from all this manoeuvring? That it is successfully fighting against corruption in Ghana?

Folks, at this point, we can see what is afoot. My opinion is clear: What Anas has put in place is a major threat to the Akufo-Addo government and all is being done to discredit him so that whatever he showcases in his activities will be discounted.

Anything of the sort raises only one major question: Is that how to fight corruption in Ghana under Akufo-Addo, especially considering the specific focus of this investigative work by Anas and his team that deals with happenings under Akufo-Addo?

Interestingly, the Akufo-Addo government has been skirting around the issue and turning away from commenting on it. In the recording, Kwesi Nyantakyi claims to have Akufo-Addo in his pocket (whatever it means is clear to Ghanaians), and he is a known financier of Akufo-Addo’s political bid.

Rushing to have him arrested and investigated isn’t solving any problem for Akufo-Addo. Getting misguided characters to come out with utterances undermining the integrity and credibility of Anas won’t either. So, what is what now?

My take: The very forces used by Akufo-Addo to win political power are now turning into the forces that will undermine him and get him out of power. Akufo-Addo can’t remain in power through subterfuge. The earlier he comes to terms with this reality, the better for him.

Ghanaian politics is really interesting, full of nonsense for those who have the stomach for nonsense to succeed.
