The public has been urged to construct septic tanks at the entrance of buildings to make dislodgement of the tank accessible and easy.

According to Mr Emmanuel Safo, the New Juaben Municipal Environmental Officer, the appropriate location for septic tanks 'are the entrances of buildings so that in extreme cases, the cesspit emptier can just stand on the road to reach out to the tanks'.

He said per the regulations in the building permits, septic tanks as well as toilet facilities were of utmost priorities in the requirements prior to the granting of permits for every building.

The environmental officer said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, on household and public place toilet facilities and access for the cesspit emptier.

He said however that, if a septic tank would be placed at the back of a house, then the regulation required that there was enough space to give access to the cesspit emptier when the need for dislodgment arises.

Recently, there have been issues of accessibility of the cesspit emptier to dislodge septic tanks in some houses in the municipality, especially in the newly developing communities like Agavenya, Acheampong and Trom.

GNA checks indicated that most houses had the access to their homes blocked by other buildings which had become issues of contention between the residents in those areas.

A resident at one of the suburbs, Acheampong, Madam Tina Apaw told GNA that early this year when her manhole was full and she went to contract the authorities to dislodge, she was told that the cesspit emptier could not have access to the house and eventually, when she could not stand the stench emanating from the septic tank, she had to yield to a directive by the assembly to have a manual dislodgement.

This manual dislodgement means that the septic tank would be emptied by the hand for a fee higher than the vehicle.

Another resident at Trom told GNA that she was also asked to do manual dislodgement the last time her tank was full because the cesspit emptier could not have access to the house.

She said, she had made complaints to the assembly and awaiting response and therefore temporarily stopped tenants in the house from using the toilet until the issue was resolved.
