US Ambassador To Be Pushed To Brief Parliament On Planned Deportation

The Minority members on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee are intensifying their push for the US Ambassador to Ghana Robert Jackson to be summoned before the House.

The move is for Mr Jackson to brief them on a planned deportation of some Ghanaians living in the United States.

Soon after the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States of America, the US Ambassador to Ghana revealed that the Trump administration was set to deport over 7,000 Ghanaians who have abused the terms of their visas.

At the time, he said the Ghanaians were at different stages of the deportation process.

So it was no surprise that earlier this year, some 86 Ghanaians were deported from the United States.

It was alleged that the deportees had engaged in various immigration offences including the abuse of the terms of their visas and engaging in illegal employment.

But it seems there are more deportations on the way, a development the Minority is unhappy with.

Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak who has since filed a question in the House, says he would garner more support from his colleagues to ensure the ambassador details the House with the needed information this week.

He said staying silent on the issue is not right.
“I think that it is important that as a nation we begin to ask the people we have entrusted with our destiny to do the work on behalf of Ghanaian citizens.

“I don’t think that it is fair, right for us as a nation to sit by knowing that the Americans intend to deport some of our compatriots and yet we are not being told how many of them are going to be deported, the reasons for which they are being deported, whether their rights are being respected and even when they are going to be deported,” he added.

Dr Apaak said he will pull all the strings available to him in order to get some answers before the deportation.
