Challenges Facing Livestock Sector Should Be Addressed

Tamale, May 25, GNA - Stakeholders in the livestock sector have been advised to adopt pragmatic measures to harness the full potential of the sector for development.

Alhaji Issah Salifu, Technical Committee Chairman of Community Life Improvement Programme (CLIP), who gave the advice, said there was the need for stakeholders in the livestock sector to adopt pragmatic measures to address constant conflicts between them and crop farmers.

He said that would enhance the development of the livestock sector to promote sustainable economic development.

Alhaji Salifu was speaking at a workshop in Tamale to share experiences in the implementation of the Strengthening the Resilience of Agro-pastoral System in West Africa (PARSAO) project.

The one-day workshop is aimed at scaling up efforts at improving the well-being of livestock farmers as well as industry players along the livestock value chain to ensure peaceful co-existence in the sector and was organised by CLIP in collaboration with Acting for Life, based in France, as part of its implementation of the PARSAO project in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.

Participants were drawn from various stakeholder groups including; security agencies, cattle dealers association, crop farmers and chiefs in the three regions.

The project seeks to improve the well-being of agro-pastoral communities in West Africa and promote sustainable economic development of the livestock sector throughout the sub-region through securing, servicing, and promoting trans-border livestock mobility.

Mr Lukman Yussif, Programme Manager of CLIP urged cattle herders associations and crop farmer associations to take advantage of the strategies of the PARSAO project to ensure peaceful co-existence.

Mr Yussif said there was need for stakeholder collaboration to end farmers-herders conflicts to harness the full potential of the livestock sector in the country.
