Anas Aremeyaws GFA Video: Has The Presidency Breached The Principles Of Media Public-Sphere?
25.05.2018 LISTEN

A circulating media report (Fallout from Anas undercover investigation as President orders arrest of Kwesi Nyantakyi”-Ghanaian Times 23/05/18, pg1) on the investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw’s findings relating to GFA’s President Kwesi Nyantakyi, has been made available to the President and the Presidency.

Ethically, it is appropriate for the President as the Head of State and his Presidency to have first-hand access to the Public-Content (Anas’ Video).

The President having first access to this National and Public-Content and being the first person to effect action on behalf of the citizenry prior to the entire citizenry having access to the same investigative findings, is relatively affront to the principles of Media ‘Public Sphere’ on the following grounds:

1. The media, an institution within the ‘Public Sphere’, in principle is open to and shared by ALL (i.e. The President and the Citizenry) as common receivers of information within the same time, space and place.

Contrary to the public sphere principle, the citizenry did not receive the information in the same time, space and place, as the Presidency and were therefore Temporally Isolated.

2. Temporal Isolation of the Citizenry could create public-isolation that may lead to harmful speculations around the Public-Truth and the Image of the Presidency.

3. Furthermore, the public viewing schedule of the video on the (6th, 9th, 10th 13th and 16th of June, 2018) compounds the public -isolation and subsequently a temporal breach of ‘Public-Debate principle as envisage in the Media-Public Sphere where all citizenry is supposed to access information and debate at the same time, space and place.

The Centre for Media Analysis (CMA), recommend that, Temporal-Public Isolation due to public sphere breaches should be discouraged within Ghana’s ‘Public Sphere’ in order to ensure effective public debate and opinion for socio-political development.

It is our believe that the avoidance of Temporal -Public Isolation would go a long way in preventing speculations around Public-Truth in Ghana.
