As part of activities to mark this years World Malaria Day, which was observed on 25th April 2018, AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Gold Mine in partnership with the Municipal Health Directorate, Johns Hopkins Centre for Communication for private Sector Malaria Programme and the Ghana Education Service organised an Inter Senior high school quiz competition on Friday 4th May 2018 in the Tarkwa Nsuem Municipality. The theme was Ready to Beat Malaria and sought to champion malaria prevention in schools.

The participating schools were Tarkwa Senior High School, Fiaseman Senior High School and Benso Senior High.

Addressing the students, Senior Manager - Processing of the Mine, Samuel Noi, said Iduapriem Gold Mine’s aim of launching its malaria control programme in 2017 is to contribute to the global efforts to achieve the 2020 milestones of the World Health Organisation Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030 which targets for a 40% reduction in malaria case incidence and death rates.

“A total of Twelve thousand five hundred (12,500) long lasting insecticidal Nets (LLINs) were procured and distributed to employees and sixteen out of the mine’s nineteen host communities under the phase I of the program implementation, amidst community wide sensitization programs at a total cost of GHS 238,410”,he stated.

. The mine together with its partners have developed a plan and key activities to be implemented in the schools this year to include in the phase II of the programme by training 58 senior house masters and mistresses of the schools to support in the program implementation as well as monitor program outcomes. The project will also distribute 4,315 quantities of student bed size insecticides treated nets to students in the three Senior High Schools.

The keenly contested quiz had three rounds from which the competitors answered questions on malaria and how mosquitoes spread the disease. It was later followed by current affairs. At the end of the three rounds, Fiaseman Senior High emerged winners with 46 points, followed by Tarkwa Secondary with 34 points and Benso Secondary with 27 points taking the 3rd place. Awards were presented to the participating schools. For their prize, Fiaseman took home a plaque, citation, branded wall clock and educational materials.

The goal of the quiz competition is to have advocates who will be championing the cause of malaria prevention in their respective schools.

The Municipal Health Director of Tarkwa Nsuaem, Emmanuel Affelkum commended, the mine for their support in fighting malaria extended to the three senior high schools in the municipality which seeks to reduce the prevalence rate of malaria among students and staff. He however called on the mine to help the municipal directorate acquire computers to enable them manage the data in tracking the level of progress made in the reduction of the disease in the area.

AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Gold Mine is extending the malaria program to cover Bankyem, Akyempim and Charliekrom communities. For the year 2018, the mine is committing in excess of One Hundred and Seventy Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS 170,000.00) and sensitization programs at a total cost of GHS 238,410.
