Fiaseman Senior High School in Tarkwa has won the maiden malaria quiz competition organised by the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipal Education Directorate in partnership with AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem (AAI) Gold Mine and the Municipal Health Directorate.

They beat Tarkwa Senior High School and Benso Senior High Technical School.

After three contests, Fiaseman Senior High School obtained 43 points, followed by Tarkwa Senior High School with 37 points and Benso Senior High Technical School had 27 points to place third.

The three Senior High Schools all in AAI Gold Mine's catchment area participated in the competition which was centred on "malaria prevention, history and current affairs".

Delivering the welcome address, Acting General Manager of Iduapriem Gold Mine, Mr Samuel Bonney Noi said the quiz competition formed part of their events to mark the World Malaria Day which falls on April 25 of every year.

Mr Noi said the competition was not just to identify winners and reward them accordingly, but to ultimately have advocates who would be championing the course of malaria prevention in their respective schools.

The acting General Manager said Iduapriem Gold Mine launched the malaria control programme in June 2017 which was aimed at contributing to the global efforts to achieve the 2020 milestones of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030 specifically, targets 40 per cent reduction in malaria case incidence and death rates.

He said a total of 12,500 long lasting insecticidal Nets were procured and distributed to employees and sixteen out of the 19 mines host communities under the phase I of the programme implementation, amidst community wide sensitisation programmes at a total cost of GHS 238,410.

Mr Noi said a short term impact assessment carried out by the Municipal Health Directorate revealed a downward trend of malaria cases in the Iduapriem Sub-Municipal health facilities within the mine's host communities.

He stated that with this year being the phase II of the project, the mine had extended it to the three Senior High Schools based on a need assessment carried out in these schools.

Mr Noi said the mine together with its partners had developed a plan and key activities to be implemented in the schools this year.

This, he said included training of 58 senior house masters and mistresses of the schools to support in the programme implementation as well as monitor the programme outcomes.

The Municipal Education Director, Mr Alex Kwaku Duah and the Municipal Health Director, Mr Emmanuel Affelkum applauded AAI Gold Mine for their support and commended the various schools and their teachers for their hard work.

All the nine participants received a school bag, while their schools had a wall clock each.
