MAY 8, 2018 LISTEN

Residents of Nabango in the Kassena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region will have to seek health-care outside the town as fire outbreak had destroyed the nurses quarters at the Nabango CHPS centre last Sunday.

Even though the cause of the fire is unknown, it reportedly started from one of the three rooms in the nurses quarters and eventually spread to the others.

Speaking to Citi News, the in-charge of the facility which doubles as a midwife Mary Abacheng said, it took the intervention of community members to put off the fire after the Ghana Fire Service failed to respond swiftly.

She narrated that, the fire outbreak has wholly burnt down their rooms and properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis.

“I was with a pregnant woman when the fire started from my room, so we called the Ghana Fire service in Navrongo municipality, but they said, that wasn’t their operational area. So we called on the Paga Fire service, but at the time the fire service personnel could get to the scene, community members had come to help put off the fire. Our three-room quarters is completely burnt including our properties”.

Mrs Abacheng reiterated that they are compelled to vacate their post after two O’clock in the afternoon due to the absence of accommodation, and that will thus affect health care delivery.

“The situation will affect health care delivery. Now that, our quarters are completely burnt including our properties, it means we cannot stay here to render services at 2:00 pm.

We cannot conduct deliveries, deal with patients at our Out Patient Department (OPD) and render general health care services to residents after 2:00 pm”.
